Job Description


Canada Post is seeking an enthusiastic, experienced legal professional with strong analytical, organizational and interpersonal skills to join a collegial team of talented legal professionals and support Senior Legal Counsel in legal matters involving investments, with a focus on Real Estate, by the Canada Post Corporation Registered Pension Plan (CPCRPP). The CPCRPP is the one of the largest single employer Defined Benefit Pension Funds in Canada, with assets encompassing a diversified portfolio that includes Real Estate, Private Equity, Infrastructure, Fixed Income and Capital Market Investments.”


Job Responsibilities


Below are the main job requirements and responsibilities for the Legal Counsel, Pension Investments:


  • Provide practical, strategic business-focused legal advice to the CPCRPP Investment Teams mainly focused on Real Estate but also including Infrastructure, Private Equity, Fixed Income and Capital Markets.

  • Use your professional acumen and business judgment to facilitate the achievement by the Canada Post Pension Plan of its investment objectives, including the application of Environmental Social Governance (ESG) considerations to investment decisions.

  • Collaborate with internal and external teams in the negotiation and drafting of investment agreements including various Real Estate agreements (such as development, property, asset management and financing), as well as Limited Partnerships, Joint Venture, Co-ownership, Investment Management and other agreements.

  • Assist Senior Legal Counsel and Senior Real Estate Paralegal with various investment vehicles to ensure compliance with Pension legislation and tax rules.

  • Develop and communicate, in a concise meaningful manner, legal opinions on a variety of commercial, real estate , regulatory and other issues affecting Pension Investments.

  • Monitor legal trends and case law in order to provide advice and guidance in a proactive manner.

  • Support and assist members of the Legal Affairs team as a subject-matter expert.

  • Effectively manage external counsel in all jurisdictions with respect to transactional and litigation matters, in order to ensure excellent quality of service and good value for external costs.


Qualifications



Education


  • Law degree from a recognized institution and membership in good standing with a provincial bar association.


Experience and Capabilities


  • The candidate must have 2-6 years legal experience in Investments and the negotiation and drafting of investment agreements including Limited Partnerships, Joint Venture, Co-ownership, Investment Management and other agreements.

  • The candidate must have 2-6 years experience in Real Estate law, including financing leasing, purchases and sales, environmental issues, property management and construction contracts, easements and licenses.

  • Experience in Investments by Pension Funds would be preferred.

  • Proven strong communication skills, including preparation and delivery of oral and written presentations.

  • Proven capabilities in mentoring and influencing others.

  • Knowledge of best practices and experience in the implementation of templates and precedents would be an asset.

  • Demonstrated organization skills needed to manage the legal work for a complex and dynamic investment portfolio.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of legal and cross-functional teams, while multi-tasking and managing competing priorities.

  • Motivation, aptitude as a self-starter, and the ability to "hit the ground running".

  • Familiarity with electronic document/matter management is an asset.
